First Bavarian energy education center for the careful use of energy and the environment

On July 8, 2021, the interactive exhibition "um:welt" opened / A project by the Energy Agency together with the city and district of Regensburg; cooperation with the district of Kelheim

Almost ten years have passed from the initial idea to its implementation: On July 8, 2021, um:welt opened in Regensburg, the first energy education center in all of Bavaria. During the tour, visitors learn how the Earth's climate and energy system works and what influence individual behavior has on it. "Each and every one of us can do something very practical to combat climate change. If people grasp this at the end of a visit to the um:welt, then the Energy Education Center has fulfilled its purpose," says Ludwig Friedl, Managing Director of the Energy Agency of Regensburg (EAR).

Close cooperation with companies and universities in the region

In principle, the um:welt is recommended for children aged 10 and up. But school children are not the main focus. The center is aimed primarily at adults from tertiary education to retirement. At the same time, it's aimed at individual visitors or families exploring it on their own, as well as groups taking part in a themed event. Ludwig Friedl is happy to welcome entire intern cohorts from companies, professors with their students, adult education course groups, clubs on an excursion, and many more. Close cooperation with regional industry and scientists is an integral part of the concept.

A tour of the um:welt takes you through six areas. In the first five, visitors learn how the Earth's energy and climate system works, how climate change comes about, and what they themselves contribute to it through their behavior. To discover this, visitors indicate some of their behaviors in the areas of mobility, nutrition, or consumption at interactive stations. They experience directly how much this behavior contributes to climate change. Anyone who is motivated by this to do something about it will find concrete, implementable solutions in area 6, the ideas workshop. Groups can work together in workshops here – with assistance from the Energy Agency if needed. Themed weeks and themed months will focus on specific aspects such as mobility or building and living. The Energy Agency has worked closely with the scientific community to design and maintain the exhibition into the future. The claim is that all um:welt content corresponds to the current state of research.
